Examination background #
CET-4 and CET-6 were first taught by East China Petroleum Institute (now China University of Petroleum (East China)) An English proficiency test widely popular in schools.
In 1984, the Ministry of Education organized an English education seminar at China University of Petroleum. At that time, the school was holding an English proficiency test, which attracted the attention of the participants. Since then, the Ministry of Education has begun to promote English proficiency tests in colleges and universities across the country.
The first College English Test Band 4 was held in 1986.
In order to adapt to the new development situation of my country’s higher education, deepen teaching reform, improve teaching quality, and meet the country’s needs for talent training in the new era, the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education organized and formulated in early 2004 and started piloting it in some universities across the country. “Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)” (hereinafter referred to as “Teaching Requirements”). The “Teaching Requirements” stipulate that the teaching goals of college English courses are: to cultivate students’ comprehensive English application abilities, especially listening and speaking abilities, so that they can effectively communicate oral and written information in English in future work and social interactions. Since the “Teaching Requirements” began to be piloted in some colleges and universities across the country, teachers have actively participated in and cared about this reform, and made many useful attempts in various aspects such as teaching models, teaching methods, and use of teaching materials. Students participating in the pilot also generally reported that the new teaching concepts and methods have greatly improved their interest in learning English, enabled personalized learning, and improved learning efficiency.
To this end, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6, which are the main means of identifying whether our country’s college students’ English proficiency meets the “Teaching Requirements”, must also be reformed accordingly to adapt to the new situation and make the test more relevant. Serve well in implementing the “Teaching Requirements”. Under the auspices and leadership of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, the College English Band 4 and Band 6 examination reform group and the examination committee have formulated the “National College English” Reform Plan for the CET-4 and CET-6 Examinations (Trial)”.
The College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 is a standardized test that serves teaching. Therefore, the direction of the examination reform is to maintain the scientificity, objectivity and fairness of the examination, while maximizing the positive guiding effect of the examination on college English teaching, that is, through the reform of the CET-4 and CET-6 examinations, guiding teachers and students Correctly handle the relationship between teaching and examinations, and use the CET-4 and CET-6 examinations more rationally so that the examinations can better serve teaching. The goal of the reform of the College English Test Band 4 and CET-6 is to more accurately measure the comprehensive English application ability of Chinese college students, especially the English listening and speaking ability, so as to reflect the requirements of social reform and opening up for the comprehensive English application ability of Chinese college students. Since the College English Test Band 4 and CET-6 is a very large-scale standardized test, the reform of the test needs to be forward-looking and feasible, and implemented step by step.
